MAGNOLIA
2022
Hei Matau Home
Magnolia is the final piece to fit into this architectural Auckland home. A celebration of James’ journey of glass and brass and the final lighting sculpture added to the family of special pieces designed and created for this home.
As soon as you walk into the space you are captivated by the curving central staircase (you cant miss it) spanning 9 metres. James wanted the lighting sculpture to have presence without feeling heavy or demanding of the space. The choice of brass and glass was a natural direction for this home and would fit well with the other sculptures previously installed. A slow taper gradually becomes apparent as the arms cascade down, ending with a small branch of glass just peaking out on the ground floor.
Magnolia is soft and feminine with delicate branches curving into the space. Each branch holding a collection of textured glass petals that diffuse the warm white LED that is concealed within. James chose to texture each glass petal by hand, resulting in no two being alike.
The brass is polished and sealed to give it a lustre that fits so perfectly into the home. The result a warmth emanating into each space, task light enough or dimmable for just a hint of golden glow.
To see a design come to fruition is truly rewarding, Magnolia is such a special piece in James’s portfolio and has been many years in the making.
