Wairua (noun) spirit, soul - the spirit of a person which exists beyond life.
James’ ‘Soul Map’ a sculpture of beaten, aged brass, made up of quarters that come together to form his Wairua.
Represented are places that James has journeyed too, light permeates through the perforations at different volumes, embodying the significance of that place and the world as James experiences it.
Within each perforation is a piece of cast glass, these pay homage to ancient travellers where water was the connecting factor of places, cultures and experiences.
Wairua is a large 1.8m wall sculpture with soft LED lighting, aged brass and cast glass.
Wairua will be hung in the newly completed Quincy Hotel in Melbourne
