MY LIGHTING DESIGNS ARE INSPIRED BY MY DEEP IMMERSION IN NEW ZEALAND’S NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.

 TI KOUKA

The Ti Kouka sculpture was designed in 2020 as a garden feature, showcasing warm white LED lights that illuminate the surroundings for visitors. Unfortunately, the pandemic halted all production. However, in 2022, we were finally able to reconnect with our client, revisit their brief, and adjust the concept to complement their newly constructed home.

The result was a more refined version of the original Ti Kouka. James removed the lighting element, as it was unnecessary in the new context of this sculpture. The intention was always to incorporate New Zealand flora, taking a small element and creating an abstract, organic form that reflects the natural surroundings of the home.

Ti Kouka is nestled within a meticulously curated garden designed by Xanthe White, which harmoniously integrates both native and newly planted flora that will thrive around the sculpture.

Standing nearly 4 meters tall, Ti Kouka is crafted from solid brass sections, featuring a robust internal structure and a durable brass base plate. The sculpture will naturally develop a patina and age as it is exposed to the elements over time. Gently curving above you, Ti Kouka displays a subtle shimmer of movement while remaining stoic and strong, welcoming visitors to this magnificent home for many years to come.

Proudly designed and crafted in New Zealand by James Russ.
