MY LIGHTING DESIGNS ARE INSPIRED BY MY DEEP IMMERSION IN NEW ZEALAND’S NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.

TOeTOe

What began as an idea to excavate a plum tree evolved into a more nuanced, yet still substantial, floral sculpture known as ToeToe.

Our client has been constructing and renovating their dream home, which is located on the side of a mountain. The objective was to design a structure that would have a substantial presence in the environment while allowing the home’s surroundings to be highlighted. Initial discussions about excavating a plum tree to serve as the focal point of the design quickly evolved into a more subtle and manageable approach. Drawing inspiration from the client’s interests, the original floral design, and the rugged natural landscape of the South Island, James created the ToeToe Sculpture.

Toetoe features 40 brass arms that seem to emerge from the ground and extend into the impressive space above, with hints of new growth peeking through. Standing over 4 meters tall, Toetoe gently curves toward the center of the room, with thousands of twinkling LEDs cascading down to illuminate this beautiful living area.

A truly unique lighting sculpture that embodies the beauty and resilience of New Zealand's natural environment.
