Wairua 4 celebrates Tupaia, the Polynesian priest and navigator who assisted Captain Cook with his discovery of New Zealand in 1769. Tupaia drew a remarkable chart of the world as he understood it at that time. This chart illustrated intricate interconnected voyaging routes extending from Rapa Nui to Hawaii, while also representing individually both the major islands of Aotearoa New Zealand. He was deeply respected and cherished by Europeans, Māori, and Pacific peoples for his insight and ability to translate knowledge.

Wairua celebrates handmade craftsmanship, utilising traditional techniques and ancient concepts that are becoming increasingly valuable in this digital age. The stories it conveys are relevant to and inclusive of all facets of our modern society.
